Massage Therapy – Luxury or Necessity?

A report from The American Massage Therapy Association states that 28 percent of people get a massage do so to reduce stress and relax. Often seen as a luxury that helps with relaxation, but massage is also a beneficial, non-invasive way to help improve your health.

Seeing a massage therapist is a great known way to help reduce stress. It can also help to reduce blood pressure, improve sleep quality enabling you to cope better with the demands of everyday life.  But you know, having a massage can do so much more!

Health Benefits of Massage Therapy

Research by the National Centre for Complementary Integrative Health conducted between 2008 and 2012 showed that massage can help with the following;

 

Chronic back or neck pain

  • The pain associated with arthritis
  • Discomfort from sore muscles
  • Help with range of motion
  • Promotion of healing by increasing circulation to areas related to injury,
  • Reduce episodes of headaches
  • Boost immune system
  • Problems related to carpal tunnel syndrome.

Like any good health maintenance; good eating habits, exercise, health check-ups or stress management, they create positive effects once they become regular habits. This is also true of massage. Getting a massage once in a while to treat yourself is a temporary moment of relaxation, a regular massage however creates a cumulative effect for your body and your mind.

Sitting at a computer every day for hours may result in constant tightness in the shoulder and neck muscles.
